HISTORY OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY
The first seed of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was planted at a U.N. international conference on discrimination in 1977. The first state to recognize the day was South Dakota in 1989. Berkeley, California, and Santa Cruz followed suit.
Although the day was still considered Columbus Day up to 1937, many people began calling it Indigenous Peoples’ Day to celebrate the rich culture and the lives of the Native American people.
For the Native Americans, Columbus Day was always hurtful as it glorified the violent past constituting 500 years of colonial torture and oppression by European explorers like Columbus and those who settled in America. Indigenous Peoples’ Day draws attention to the pain, trauma, and broken promises that were erased by the celebration of Columbus Day. Before his arrival, the indigenous folk were successful self-sufficient communities that sustained life for thousands of years.
Year by year, the movement to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day spreads to more and more states, towns, and cities across the United States of America.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates, recognizes, and honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous People, not just in America, but around the world. Their way of life and culture carries wisdom and valuable insights into how we can live life more sustainably.
Today, 14 U.S. states celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and not Columbus Day, as well as the District of Columbia. More than 130 cities including Arlington, Amherst, Cambridge, Brookline, Marblehead, Great Barrington, Northampton, Provincetown, Somerville, and Salem also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Columbus Day 2021 is an annual federal American holiday that occurs on the second Monday in October each year. Columbus Day 2021 is a day that commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas and his discovery of America on October 12, 1492.
History of Columbus Day
People, throughout the world, have celebrated Columbus's voyage since the colonial period. Historically, the Italian-born explorer set sail in August, 1492. He intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the renowned gold and Spice Islands of Asia; instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century. Columbus Day became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and later became a federal holiday in the United States by proclamation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937.
The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the Day of the Race (Día de la Raza) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the United States. Columbus Day 2021 celebrations are known to be controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the Native American people.
It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus' actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honoured for discovering North America, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America.
Traditions of Columbus Day
Traditionally, celebrations of Columbus Day 2021 include lessons about Christopher Columbus and his voyage at schools. Throughout the United States, Columbus Day 2021 has evolved into a celebration of Italian-American heritage. Communities host parades and street fairs with colourful costumes, music and Italian food. In many cities and towns that honour indigenous peoples on this holiday hold activities such as traditional dance and lessons about Native American culture.
