HISTORY OF NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY
While National Read a Book Day is believed to have originated in the US, other details of the day’s history are unclear. What is clear, though, is Americans’ love for books! And, for many, this is a welcomed day because 81% of us don’t feel we spend as much time reading as we would like. So, today is the perfect opportunity to set aside a little time to catch up on our “to read” list.
The popularity of book clubs points to our ongoing love for books. They date back to the 1600s with women’s Bible studies. But, in the last few decades, reading has taken on a much more social element influenced, in large part, by Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. Starting in 1996, Oprah’s Book Club recommended 70 books contributing to over $55 million in sales and has been credited with inspiring millions of people to read books.
Over 74% of Americans have read at least one book in the last 12 months. Sure, the busyness of life definitely gets in the way of our reading pursuits with many other activities competing for our time. Luckily, electronic platforms have made it easier for us to read on the go. Almost 20% of books consumed are now via electronic platforms. Whatever format you prefer, grab or download the book on the top of your stack and dive in!
🗽Labor Day September 6, 2021🗽

Significance of Labor Day 2021
Labor Day 2021, also known as Labour Day, is a federal holiday observed annually on the first Monday of September. Originally it was a day organized to celebrate various labor associations' strengths and their contributions to the United States economy and presently it is a day that gives workers a day of rest and celebrates their contribution to the American economy. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day 2021 Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer.
History of Labor Day
The history of Labor Day 2021, in the United States and Canada, dates back to late 19th century when the trade union and labor movements grew enormously and resultantly a variety of days were chosen by trade unionists as a day to celebrate labor. The holiday was first proposed in the 1880s by Matthew Maguire, a machinist, while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882.
It is argued that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annual labour festival held in Toronto, Canada. Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday in 1887. In June 1894, during the Pullman Strike, which resulted in the deaths of workers at the hands of United States Army and United States Marshals Service, United States Congress unanimously voted to approve legislation to make Labor Day a national holiday and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law six days after the end of the strike.
Traditions of Labor Day
Traditionally, Labor Day 2021 was marked with a street parade to demonstration to the public the strength and hardworking spirit of trade and labor organizations, this parade was followed by a festival for the workers and their families. Later, this became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the civil significance of the holiday.
Presently, Labor Day 2021 is a day of rest or the last chance for many workers to go on trips before the summer ends. For many students, it is marks one of the last few days before school starts again. In some neighbourhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events (with the football season starting on or around Labor Day and many teams playing their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend).
